Aston Villa v West Ham

  1. Well, not quite 'little big horn" but a defeat's a defeat! I'd hoped for better after last week's win. The spotlight's gonna turn back to Alf, and if he ain't careful he's gonna get scalped.

  2. The first half was pretty grim stuff Filthy, I was going to say we were one dimensional but I think non-dimensional might be a better description. I hope there wasn't too many people watching Fox Soccer Channel Sunday morning, as the first half could have scared a lot of folks away. Somebody posted on the BBC or The Guardian that it was the worst 45 minutes of football they had ever seen ! Things did pick up in the second half, but a penalty, a free kick and own goal pretty much tells the rest of the story.

  3. Sounds like the Guardian was more interested in EPL "metallic footballers" than the game at hand, alas.

  4. Well I think anything, and I do mean anything, would have been more interesting than what The Hammers served up in the first half Club Penguins ! Alf Tupper provided ammo for his detractors by the bucket load !

  5. increasingly General Custer-like! (apart from hair colour etc) But he probably is hoping the cavalry will show up soon!
It does get me...I know the age of club loyalty is dead, but the players are getting wheelbarrows full of dosh, the least they can be is professional and put in a decent shift F.F.S!

  6. As far as the front line goes Filthy, I think the cavalry he ordered is available. As to how hard they will fight, we shall see. A bit further down the field, my theory that when Noble has a bad game The Irons have a bad game, once again holds true.

  7. I followed the Gnidriad feed too. Seemed very easy to drift off into anything else in the 1st half- metallic footballers included.
Bit more inspiring in the 2nd but again couldn't get it done.
Much as Sam has issues if they can't / won't do it on the field not much you can do.

  8. "Seemed very easy to drift off into anything else" sounds like our attack Smitty. I do believe Alf is taking the entire squad on a few days holiday (Dubai again ?) so maybe a bit of currant bun will freshen them up ? Not a bad gig eh ? Tons of money and a free holiday too ! I bet in Vic Watson's day it was a day trip to Southend and buy your own chips !

  9. I'm sure they'll all play much better with a tan.
Rock n 6 penneth with a swifty or 2 never did anyone any harm. Not sure about Gordon Sahara, and a bottle of '77 Tent # 2

  10. Gordon Sahara you've stumped me there Smitty ? Gordon Banks, Gordon Bennett and Gordon of Khartoum I'm up on, but not Mr Sahara. By the way it is Dubai again - an Ann Summers - United Arab Emirates connection ? Perhaps ?

  11. Cordon Sahara's cousin.
    Is there an AS-UAE connection?
1 room = 1 suitcase full of frillies?

  12. Cordon as in Cordon Bleu ? Sorry Smitty I'm still lost. As for Ann Summers, I'm not sure that "frillies" are still the big sellers there !

  13. In professional tennis, players can get fined for, essentially, failure to play. Anything like that exist in football? (or maybe getting a scalping is penalty enough....)

  14. How Do Christian, by "failure to play" do you mean not physically show up to play ? Or make no real effort to win ? If you mean the latter, sadly the only mechanism I know of is to hurl abuse !

  15. We have way too much talent to just be thumping the ball up, The only reason I say we should not sack Sam immediately is because he is probably better then who ever would replace him. Curbishley would have us in the top half with this team

  16. I'm glad you mention Alan Curbishley, Don't Hurt 'Em he seems to have faded quickly from memory, I hardly ever see his name mentioned on other Hammers' sites. I always thought that he did a good job with the team and when he left, he did it because the club sold his best outfield player at the time without consulting him - right on the back of a decent win too. Perhaps because he was part off the Eggy Icelandic Financial Meltdown, which modern history has now taught us nearly put West Ham Utd belly up ! Still, I agree that he would have got some better performances out of this squad. He never managed again, do you think it's because he sued and won his money ? Could that have put him on some kind of blacklist ?

  17. I didn't realise he wasn't still plying his trade somewhere. That's a real waste. I always thought he was the right mixture of being English AND encouraging of a more modern (attractive) approach.
a nice man as well so I believe.

  18. "English, a nice man and encouraging of an attractive approach" - it's not exactly what they're buying (manager wise) in The Premiership these days is it Filthy ?I agree it's a shame he's not working somewhere - at least as far as I know.

  19. I had a little look for info on him. Still living in Essex, interested recently in the Ipswich job. Couple of things I'd forgotten? not known: son of a docker, younger brother of Bill , rock promoter, (The Who).
I suppose the qualities I think are good are out of fashion.
On another topic, I can just see Alf T sitting in his deck chair, hanky on head, glass with umbrella resting on his "manly" chest, poolside in Dubai. I think they've had more than enough "rest" in the last few games!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Couldn't agree more about them already being rested Filthy, especially the Geordie contingent - AC has had how much time off and Nobby hardly been impressing us with his work rate. Maybe Alf should have taken them to an off season "Up North" seaside town, to show them where they might end up ?

  21. Any idea what this Dubai thing is all about? Didn't they go there before?
I think you're right if they just need a rest a week in Skeggy would be fine. Not much trouble you can get into there. Plenty of fresh air.
Soon be glad to be back on the field, wit a bit of thousiasm.

  22. I think its what "the beautiful people" do nowadays Smitty - Dubai = sun, sand, shopping and the locals all kept at a scimitar's distance.

  23. The King of Canning Town and the beautiful people
I can't get used to this modern world stuff.
I had enough trouble getting to grips with Torremolinos.
Think I'd prefer Cleethorpes, got atmosphere and half a pier going cheap.

  24. I doubt you can get a stick of rock in Dubai, Smitty !

  25. Domestic, no. Top shelf imported, sure.

  26. The only thing I can say in my defence, is that I swear it wasn't pre-meditated. Sincere apologies to all !
