West Ham v. Norwich

  1. ..good saitch A..P ..
On the night at the game any sense of forboding about the 90 mins that lay ahead were brilliantly put into touch by our 'Saves more shots than Durex Goalie Adrian ..(at the 1980 cup final i saw a banner outside wembley stadium one of our Claret & Blue army was holding "Parkes saves more shots than Durex")..the 3 or more times Senor San Miguel Del Castillo saved us from a certain 'Naarwich' goal,im 99% sure Jussi would've had a hole in the Dunkey and let the shots in
Jimmy Greaves not any Bobby Moore..the lift that West Ham are in that block of flats is going up..but still could still get stuck.. if ..as we did as kids.. boot the doors on the ground floor when someone gets in ..you know what i mean..
On Match of the Day last night Gary 'Line-Acre' read a stat out that if the season had begun on jan 1st we would be in 6th place ,3pts behind the leaders
.Anyway.no more would've..could've ..should've..this time West Ham can be Arsed.. to've..C.O.Y.F.I

  2. For me Senor Adrian is this season's "silver lining" he's really turned into a top shelf keeper and my vote for Hammer Of The Year thus far. As for the match, going by most of our performance a point would have been flattering. I had to take #2 son to Physical Therapy round the corner, ten minutes before the end, with Norwich knocking on the door. Got back just in time to see Diame seal it up in the 94th - Well I Never !

  3. Feels good to be an Iron, sucks to be a Canary.
Check of the ol pacemaker in the 2nd, and we got lucky but could've gone either way.
May not be top class footie but exiting to see something going forward, rather than sit back and hope we can nick one when they're not looking.
Pleased to see Ginge get one after all this time, well deserved
Unless we totally fall apart in the run in we'll live to see another year in the prem, so now we can enjoy the ups & downs of the last games and look forward to a Alf Free next year. Can't think who'll be in his place when the dust settles, so could be another Ironacoaster. Must be boring being a Chelski fan.

  4. Ginge got a nice "mention in despatches" from The Daily Telegraph (linked on West Ham Till I Die). You're a bit more confident in our safety than I am Smitty, about both our staying in the Premiership and us being Alf free next season. This run of form may shore up Alf's standings with the Brady Bunch ? As for stayiing up, experience has taught me to wait for the Fat Lady (Mrs Allardyce ?) !

    ReplyDelete
  5. Not sure about "the cold-blooded, self-sacrificial obduracy " but I'm still glad he got one in.

I've always thought we'd stay up, just. Probably 15 -16th ish and I still think so.
As for Alf free, that was always the risk of staying up, keeping him.
    Still, we can but hope.

  6. Looked obdurate up Smitty and saw nothing too far off the mark regarding Ginge, not in terms of "the man on the pitch". Can't be a central defender for West ham and be nice, not for very long anyway !

    ReplyDelete
  7. No real problem with the definition, just a little flowery for a guy that would nut you as soon as look at you - on the pitch.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Quite right to not think you're double bagged and safe mr P. 4 good results. If that turns into 8 on the spin then can relax a bit. Need to get shot of Allardyce but if finish above 15th it might be hard to convince the triumvirate.
Are those the architects images of the new luxury apartments to grace the hallowed ground in a year or two?

  9. Your comments are getting more undecipherable and more poetic each game. At least they're keeping the shutout streak going. That tie game 0-0 still seems strange to me.

My prepared question this game was inspired by Slippery going to the "away" game at Norwich. (I keep thinking in baseball analogies because of the two I like that better than American Football.) Since a lot of your teams are so close together geographically how do you become a fan of one team or another, other than growing up in the area close to West Ham? Or having your 3rd or 4th generation fan family thing going on?

I was born in San Francisco in 1951. The NY giants moved to SF in 1958 and my father took me to the opening game when I was seven, just so I could say I was there!
So I became a life-long Giants fan, even I moved to Florida in 1988 because of work. The only time I've ever gone to a Florida Marlins game was when the Giants came to town. That's the way most people are over here, I think. There are some people who eventually will change allegiances though. Like a friend from SF who moved to Seattle and has lived there as long as I've been here. This guy was actually rooting for the Seattle Sea Hawks a few weeks ago when they were playing against the 49'ers in the playoff game to go to the Super Bowl. I could understand it if it wasn't against the 49'ers but this was a kind of betrayal unfathomable to me.

Then you have the "frontrunners" who are fans of whatever team is winning that year.
So how do you become a fan of Chelsea say, if you live in way out in the sticks away from any city?

Finally, what happens if you get dropped out of the Premiership? I was doing some research and I thought it was something that had never happened to West Ham before? I hope that doesn't happen! I thought that's like the whole team being sent the minor leagues.

  10. With regard to the flats Filthy, they may not match the architects renderings but if they go the way of everything around Green Street, they may in a few years not look much better. Here's hoping I'm wrong, but I reckon the entire Street needs a refit and or shine up. As for Alf. I hadn't thought about The Brady Bunch using a finishing place as an executive decision maker, but you could well be right.

  11. One at a time Clueless, geography was and in my mind should still be the deciding factor in who you support, especially in a big city. You should support your local team, or what was once your or your families local team. My family came from east London and so it was either West ham or Leyton Orient, thankfully both my grandfathers supported The Hammers, so I'm something of a thoroughbred. MY dad and his brothers supported West Ham and when we were kids that's where we were taken. I don't remember having either a choice or wanting one. Now my two boys are NYC born and bred, but they need food, shelter and pocket money - this they obtained by selling their sporting souls to West Ham in a deal brokered by yours truly.

  12. Mr Clueless..oi oi moosh first time we;ve had a Rabbit..(talk)..100% Mr A.P'S answer...Not so long ago Chelsea had lower match attendances than us and in my rose tinted specs opinion were a long way behind us in a footballing way ...the Billionaire Russian buys bthe club..pumps untold spondooleys into them ...they start winning this that and the other.big .kids & little kids these days need to associate with winners and so a 'Glory Hunter' is born...not real fans of a club ..whereas us West Ham fans are proper salt of the earth because our team never wins anything yet week after week year after year you still see the same old faces at the Boleyn..true supporters dont consciously pick a team..it just happens like falling in love ..my dad(r.i.p) took me to west ham just before my 5th birthday in 1968.& i took my son when he was 6yrs old.and in all that time he like me only had eyes for the Claret & Blue of the mighty Hammers West HAM united
A.P exclusive i give you THE fat lady Mrs Allardyce she 'Dun arf look look like 'er ol man'

  13. Slippery, that all makes perfect sense. Same story as my dad (r.i.p.) taking me to the first Giants game in SF. They made it to the World Series a few times while my dad was alive, but lost each one. I was already living in Florida when they had the Bay Area Bridge series in 1989. SF vs Oakland. I went back and went to the first two games with my dad and unfortunately they lost both and they were both played in Oakland to make it worse. I had to go back for work. I turn on the TV for the 3rd game in SF and all hell breaks loose with an earthquake right before the game. This was the last big one and bits of the Bay Bridge collapsed, along with houses and a lot of structural damage to buildings, including Candlestick Park. I think it took a few weeks to get the games going again and the Giants promptly lost the next 2. Oakland wins the World Series 4-0. When I moved to Florida there wasn't even a team here, but they added the Florida Marlins in 1993 as a new franchise who proceed to win the World Series in 1997 and again in 2003! I figured I would never see them win in my lifetime, but Bing Bang Boom, they win it in 2010 & 2012.
Andy told me there isn't an equivalent of our World Series, but you have various levels of winning championships. I couldn't figure it out and no need to explain it again. I can relate to you guys. "Up The Hammers"

  14. Slippery, had a couple of goes on that link but all I got was a load of old tosh, so I donned the deer stalker and tracked Mrs A. down - she seems nice enough, not what you'd turn a looker, but perhaps back in the day ? or back in the night anyway !

  15. Relegation Clueless - thats what they call getting dropped out of the Premiership and we at West Ham are no strangers to it. Last time we took the drop (three seasons ago) we managed to get promoted the following season. The time before it took a couple of years, I won't bother you with anything before that. There is a way back, it's not easy and it doesn't always happen - then the money starts to go and before you know you've been relegated again. Take a look at the history of Leeds United.

  16. seems the team were inspired by a talk before the game v 'Naarich' from a Carpenters Rd E.15 old boy Mr Lennox Lewis who told them to "go out there and fight like he has had to do " ,funny that ,i thought what has ' Fatty Allarbuckle' been telling them then

  17. Lets put Lennox on the staff then Slippery ! Motivational Speaker and Slapper as necessary !

  18. What's the story with Ravel Morrison? Have they given up on him? Is he a lost cause? Could the "lennox Lewis home for wayward yoof" lick him into shape?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Well I know 'Arry wants him on loan at QPR and whatever the reason there appears to be "a failure to communicate" between Ravel and Alf. Ravel reckons he's being strong armed into changing his agent (to Alf's also Nolan's, Carroll's., Jussi's, Tomka's and some other Hammers) and Alf reckons Ravel's over reacting to a groin injury. As far as I;m concerned if Alf won't play him then loan him out, but DO NOT SELL. If Alf gets The Big E at the end of the season, I'd like to see someone else have a go.

  23. Oops! I had a lot of typos in the first draft.

I misunderstood this Wikipedia article when I thought West Ham United had never been relegated below the Premiership and also where I got the idea they never won
it all. It says they never dropped below the 2nd tier. That's when Andy told me there wasn't any equivalent in English Football to the Super Bowl. You have a bunch of different levels of championships and they won the FA cup a few times in his lifetime. Here's the quote from Wikipedia which I should learn not to trust to begin with. It starts out like a compliment, but ends up sounding pretty negative. We should also again take my reading comprehension into account. Each time I re-read this it's getting harder to figure out!

"They are one of eight existent clubs never to have fallen below the second tier of English football,[3] spending 55 of 87 league seasons in Division 1 to 2013. However, unlike the other seven (Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Manchester United, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur), the club has never won the league title.[4] The club's best final league position is third place in the 1985–86 First Division."

    ReplyDelete
  24. Bear (bare?) with me Cluless - By "the second tier" they mean what is now called The Championship, which many of us grew up calling the Second Division. We have never been below it - true. By "League Title" they mean what is now The Premiership Title used to be League Division One Title. Got It ? There are four tiers before you hit what might be the equivalent of the minors. Used to be called Divisions 1,2,3, 4 now known as Premiership, Championship, League One and League Two. Does this all make sense Clueless ?

  29. Thanks Andy & Slippery. I think I sorted out all the Divisions, tiers & titles info. The West Ham baseball team links worked for me. I couldn't click on them directly, but I copied them into the top browser thing & then they worked. Amazing! A baseball league in England in the 30's. Andy, If you can't get the link working, I can email you separately & then they should work by clicking on them. Either way you got to see this history of West Ham baseball to believe it. Thanks Slippery! I've always thought that us calling our baseball championship the " World Series" was a bit arrogant. And that was just when teams started popping up in Japan!

  30. The Bastards? In particular Segar??? I spent one week ( in 1982) in the south of Spain (bandit country) getting qualified as a "tennis instructor" at the segar Bastard school of tennis.
I qualified, but apparently my racquet and attitude was sub standard. If I remember rightly there were a whole bunch of Bastards there.

    ReplyDelete
  31. In my younger years Filthy, I did quite a bit of traveling and I can tell you nearly every where you go there's one there. Ian Dury even wrote a song about the brainboxes in that famile: "There Aint 'alf Been Some Clever Bastards".

  33. Slippery and all interested - I've been looking around to read more about West Ham Baseball beating the 1936 US Olympic team and check this out:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/British-Baseball-West-Ham-Club/dp/0786425946/ref=la_B004J7JGMS_1_2/279-0315267-1285423?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1392684455&sr=1-2

There's a whole book about the history of West Ham baseball! It's on Amazon US & UK if this link doesn't work it's by Josh Chetwynd.

You can search in the book for sample pages. Type in Olympics and you get the whole story about how it happened.

Next time I want to hear more about the Porn Kings who own the team.!

  34. The two owners Clueless are the Davids Gold and Sullivan and they are assisted by Karen Brady, which is why you may have seen me mention The Brady Bunch. David Gold and David Sullivan were once rivals in the "dirty book"business, who eventually became partners - they now also own Ann Summers a high street chain of sex shops. I understand that they have other business interests too and resent being labelled pornographers. In the 1990's they bought Birmingham CIty football club on the cheap (it was in administration) and eventually sold it for a handsome profit. With West Ham Utd in serious financial turmoil these two life long Hammers' fans stepped in and "rescued" the club. Like all things football the reviews have been mixed. David Gold published a brief memoir titled "Pure Gold" of which I own a personally inscribed copy !
