West Ham Utd v. Sheffield Utd (League Cup)

  1. Our own George Green spotted this worst case scenario waiting to happen, after the win at Palace. Not only that but George was at Upton Park to bear witness - below is his comment (taken from the end of the Palace comments):

I'm afraid it was one of those games where you just knew it was going to happen. Loads of possession in the middle of the pitch lots of passing but mainly side to side and lacked any real cutting edge. When we I'd get through their keeper was brilliant. We came out in the second half as if we just wanted to protect our lead and keep the ball, then wallop own goal from Winston. After that they just got behind the ball but were a bit lively on the break. Valencia didn't have a great game, Morrison seemed to lack confidence. Poyet, Potts and Burke looked solid so good for the future. Good atmosphere no negative chants but by the end it was only the away fans giving us stick.

  2. Looking back I should have realised that listening live to BBC Radio Sheffield was Bad Vodoo. There was no stream to watch that I could find and so I suffered a Sheffield-Centric commentary in which Diame' was stripped of his e' (ay) and so sounded like a Bachelors song. My switch to text for the penalty shoot out, was as you probably know too little too late.

  3. It could have been fun listening to Radio Sheffield, but only if things had gone to plan. How did RM play?

  4. No stream, no tv, so really no idea what actually went on.
Read the BBC text later but not particularly illuminating.
Giving the benefit, decent team choice some of the new /young lads out for a run most seemed ok
Thank you GG for the run down and it would seem from the 2nd half you saw we've got the old Sam with new boots ( Obligatory Sam out inserted here)
Shame we don't have a few more LC games to give try outs in but I can't say I'm overly fussed, but did it have to be those buggers.
Another coulda shoulda woulda, lets hope we have a a lot less this year now that in theory we have the people who can, as in this match we should, and if Sam had gone for the throat we would ( Managed to get a 2nd obligatory Sam out, neatly fits in this one)

  5. RM had reasonable game. Linked well with Poyet but seemed to lack a bit of confidence? Got booked for diving in the area, we were too far away to rally see if right or not. As Smithy says we just didn't go for the throat.

  6. Obviously I concede to George pretty much across the board on this one Filthy. One of the BBC Sheffield commentators seemed to "have it in" for Ravel and was particularly upset at him for wearing gloves in August. Poyet seemed to one of our better players and once again Vaz Te was not as busy as he should have been. According to the enemy broacast their goalie made some top shelf saves and our George has backed that up.

  7. Smitty, being as Alf played Valencia for the whole match (eventually 120 minutes) and subbed on Downing and Noble, I still think he should have started stronger got 2 up and then taken the the heavy hitters off. Seems that managers usually play catch up in domestic cup ties, why not get in front and then ease off the pedal ?

  8. Question for George - how did Sakho look ? Any thoughts as to why our only scorer came off when he did (half time ?)

  9. I think Alf thinks 1 up and then bugger about is the way to go, which is likely to bite us in the ass. So nothing new there.
Assuming the league is priority and there were plenty of non starting 11 to play with who need the time why not keep it to the metal for the full 90 (120)

  10. Non SU /WHU

So Miaga is on his way but we still can't get anyone to cover the full nut. Another "bargain"

  11. If you can get anyone to contribute 50P towards his upkeep you're a better man than me Smitty !

  12. Sakho looked lively AP. Took his goal well. Not sure why he was taken off, about 15-20 mins into second half but as he was replaced by Downing assumed it was to give more width and attacking intent! Latest rumour today is we are in for Song the ex Gooner! Will be at the Saints game tomorrow, let's hope for a decent result, decent game will be a bonus. At this stage getting a few points on the board and a good home record is vital.

  13. 50p!!, not me!! Outrageous.
But it is sad after we paid whatever it was we can't even lend him out at full whack

Downing looked good at Palace and sounded ok at Blades, maybe now he's not on cross to lump duty he may live up to his potential.

  14. George, I'm also hoping we might get another report from the trenches from you, although The Saints match will be on the box here in NYC.

  15. As mentioned previously Smitty, I would have preferred Downing to have started against Sheffield and come up off when we were two up. His goal against palace was pure class! In fact all the goals against Palace were tasty !

  16. Word from the trenches is shell shocked!! Can't believe how poor the same team that beat Palace was. No passion, desire, fight, or Plan B. Soton deserved their win and played how I would like the Hammers to play. I would imagine that after that Alex Song was thinking "what the f**k have I let myself in for?". Crowd was quiet for most of the time and a lot left once the third goal went in. Boos at the end, I know it was only a kids for a quid game but they could at least put some effort in.

  17. It's a 3 day holiday weekend here in The U.S.A. so I probably won't get anything up before Tuesday - which is more time to ponder this loss that I'd like. Thanks for the "brutal truth" George - we will discuss next week.
